New Year – New Start? 5 Tips on how I reach my Goals

There is always something exciting about new beginnings. Farewells have always had an important role in my life. I tend to get emotional really quickly. On the one hand I see the new beginning but on the other hand I appreciate the past time. I remember the last day at my  high school. It was this weird feeling. I felt overwhelmed by the time I had spent in those classrooms, the time with my friends and all the times we laughed our butts off.  Even though I knew this day was coming I wished to have at least on more day to say bye properly. And obviously the biggest new chapter is known as the New Year. A very interesting time of the year. People start squeezing in things that that they wanted to do the entire year, new resolutions are made and the famous ‘the year went by so fast‘ sentence is said at least 50 times in the month of December.

But to be honest. I have never seen the New Year as a new start. It sure is the beginning of a new set of 365 days and the calendar goes back to January but I don’t feel the urge to finally start with things I always wanted to do. ‘I’ll start working out in the New Year‘, ‘Let’s work on that project in January‘, ‘I want to start learning Karate after New Year’s‘. Why do people take New Year’s as an excuse to actually start working on their dreams? If you want to achieve something, if you have an aim, if u really want to start working on your goals then you should start NOW! Don’t use the night between the 31st December and 1st January as a cover up. I don’t have a problem with celebrating  New Year’s, I have a problem with people’s attitude towards that season. You don’t need a New Year, a new beginning, a fresh start to begin working on your aims. You just need to start.

Put your hand on your heart and truthfully answer this question: Have you ever set a goal and then didn’t even start working on it? That’s normal. It happens to me too. Those are the moments when we feel lazy. So why really set a time for your goals in your mind? Here are some tips that help me working on my aims and objectives throughout the year. If you really want to do something, you don’t need to wait for a New Year. All you need is the right mindset!

My top 5 tips on achieving goals

Don’t stress yourself

If you have your goal in mind the first thing to do is not to stress too much about it. Take it easy and stay calm. Don’t pressurise yourself with things you know you won’t be able in the first step. It is important to use your strengths rather than focusing on things you yet have to learn. Also don’t begin with something that drowns you. The most important thing is that you enjoy whatever you’re doing otherwise everything is useless.

Write your goals down

Take an agenda or a calendar and start writing down your to-do list. What do you want to achieve by what time? How long do you think you’ll need? What things do you need? Keeping all of these thoughts in your mind will take you nowhere near you goals. Trust me, writing down everything will help you remind your priorities. Another thing I like to do is set reminders on my laptop and phone. Certain things that are supposed to be done next month or even later come on my reminders. That way I make sure not to forget my tasks. And the best thing: Ticking them off once they’re done is the most wonderful feeling!

You have to start somewhere

There are usually two reasons why we hesitate with starting. We’re either afraid or lazy. Being afraid of new beginnings is completely normal. We are often scared of the results before even starting with projects. Why? Because we think it’s too far fetched and we’ll never reach our goals how we imagine. The truth is that we can’t know what will happen. The only thing we can do is to start. You’ll never find out what you’re capable of if you never start. Maybe you’ll succeed tremendously. Maybe you’ll fail horribly but then you’ll still gain experience and know better for the next time. This way or the other. You never really loose. You always end up with useful education.

Review your goals

Constantly check on your results. Try and set a fixed time for your reviews and check if your doing well or not. If you are then you are ready on taking your goal on the next level. Let me take an example for someone who wants to start working out. If you have started going to the gym for two months and you see positive results in your body and lifestyle then try and go next level. Try new exercises. Some that are a bit harder than the ones you have been doing till now. If you don’t see any results and you still don’t feel good about yourself  you’ll know that you have to change something. Try and speak to a trainer. Maybe try something new. Reviewing your goals will help you with your future plans.

Get to know yourself

It is so so sooo important to know yourself before you start doing anything. What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? Sometimes jumping into the cold water and figuring out things works. But even then it takes some time. If you know what you’re capable of it will be so much easier for you to see positive results quicker. Even mistakes will help you go further and get to know you better. Try to understand yourself. Once you have you’ll see how easy things go for you.
