Experiment: Berlin through my senses⎪Berlin Bound Part 1

Berlin, senses, experiment

After arriving back from Birmingham I had exactly one day to rest before we hit the road to Berlin for one week. As soon as we entered the capital I remembered one thing many of my friends told me about Berlin over the past few years: You either love it or you hate it. But honestly, I still don’t really know how I feel about this city. So let me introduce you to Berlin through my five senses. Sight, touch, sound, smell and taste. This was an experiment together with three other girls during this workshop week in Berlin. With the help of Photoshop we created these extremely creative pictures and tried to visualise how I feel in Berlin.

Sight:

It literally gives me the feeling of being in outer space. Even though I have never been there (yet) I am quite sure that I would be as overwhelmed as I always am when I visit Berlin. There is so much to see and experience. And sometimes all of that at just one place. You’ll see graffiti on almost every second wall, yellow colored trams will cross your paths but on the other hand you’ll find beautiful historical monuments. If you look around you will find people from different ethnicities and backgrounds. As you go down the streets of Berlin you’ll see different faces with different stories.

Touch:

Berlin feels different. It feels cold. But then when the sun hits the brick walls it turns to be the most comfortable spot. If you touch the monuments you’ll fell a quite roughness. Even though Berlin is such a big metropolis you can always lie down in one of the many parks and feel the gras beneath you.

Sound:

If you close your eyes you will hear the sound of the trams. In the next moment you might not hear anything at all and then suddenly be surprised by loud chirping of the birds. As you cross the street you’ll hear german rap playing for 10 seconds from someone walking next to you. Ever travelled with the train here?  The sound of the ticket puncher reminds me of a heart beeping machine combined with an electronic stamp.

Smell:

Just walked pass a shop called Guru and seriously felt like I was in India. The smell of the incense sticks had an weirdly calming effect on me. Two streets ahead I felt like being covered in cigarette smoke. Then again I don’t smell anything besides fresh air after some time.

Taste:

The tastebuds in Berlin can be very intimidating. If you are a foodie then Berlin is your place to be. It does not matter how choosy or picky you are. You will always find your desired dish. But I don’t want to spill to much. Check out the second blog post to this one to find out more about Berlin and the food from here.
